Cyber Emergency Facing Worldwide Internet Infrastructure
Lahore (Mian Iftikhar Ahmad): A global cybersecurity crisis has erupted after extremely critical security vulnerabilities were discovered in PHP, the world’s most popular programming language used across internet infrastructure and websites.
As a result, government web portals, local government networks, and public online services across various regions, including Europe, the UK, Japan, and Australia, have been severely impacted, while several system administrators have temporarily shut down key servers to protect data and prevent cyberattacks.
Artificial intelligence played a pivotal role in identifying these decade-old vulnerabilities. Hidden within PHP’s core software code for over ten years, the flaw was exceptionally complex and nearly impossible for human experts using traditional auditing methods to detect.
However, Wiz, a cybersecurity firm affiliated with Alphabet, successfully discovered the vulnerability using its automated system Wiz Atlas, which leveraged cutting-edge AI models including Google’s Gemini 4 Argon and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol.
Following the public disclosure of the vulnerabilities, the PHP open-source team immediately released emergency security patches to fix the code flaws and issued an urgent advisory instructing all website owners and server administrators to install the updates without delay.
Meanwhile, national cybersecurity agencies have recommended that systems unable to apply patches immediately should have their sensitive web pages temporarily disconnected from the internet to guard against cyber threats.
Cybersecurity firms have warned that attackers are already targeting unpatched systems. With the technical details and remediation methods now publicly available, hackers can also leverage artificial intelligence to quickly analyze the flaws, develop exploits, and launch widespread attacks, triggering a race against time between global security teams and cybercriminals.
